Yummy!

It’s no secret fresh fruits thrive in abundance during the summer months. The succulent sweetness of crisp and refreshing peaches, plums, figs and nectarines creates mouth-watering flavors and brings bright smiles to faces. Delicious and popular fruit recipes like cobblers and pies are often overloaded with high sugar, high fat and high carbs – a sure-fire way to sabotage the fit physique intense training brings. This summer season, fire up fruits on the grill for a lighter and sweeter appetizer, side dish or dessert.

Grilling fruits extracts the natural sugars for heightened flavor while still maintaining their nutrients. Fruits, in general, are low calorie, contain little to no fat, and have added nutrients like potassium, fiber and antioxidants found in vitamins A and C. While some may shy away from fresh fruits due to sugar and carbohydrate content, carbohydrates found in fresh fruits provide the body with energy and help stabilize blood glucose levels.

This recipe is accented with a dollop of higher fat, sweet Italian mascarpone cheese, which is infused with vitamin C and flavor-rich lemon and orange zest. If keeping calories low and fat out is of high importance, substitute low fat or non-fat greek yogurt and sacrifice nothing in flavor and texture.

It’s time to build those legs in all the RIGHT places.  This workout will target the legs and glutes and help you shape the lower half of the body. These are effective movements, but pay close attention to perfecting your technique to get the muscles to respond the way you want them. Get after it and don’t forget your post-workout supplements to promote the best recovery possible!

1. Step-Up Onto Bench

Grab heavy dumbbells (DBs). Tighten your core and keep spine straight with eyes up. Step up onto bench and squeeze the glutes and hamstrings as you gently tuck your pelvis under. Step back down with opposite leg. Pro Tips: Step down onto your stance leg with a slight knee bend to create constant working tension for both legs. Stepping up onto a bench greater than 90-degree angle will isolate your glute muscle. Do 3 to 4 sets of 10-12 reps.

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to an injury or infection caused by anything from allergies and toxins to a virus or blunt injury. Common types of inflammation plaguing individuals in combat and impact sports or extremely physical training regimens include acute inflammation as a result of a physical injury or trauma; low-grade chronic inflammation caused by stress within the body as a reaction to an environmental trigger; and chronic inflammation as a result of an injury that never healed completely or properly.

Depending on the site and cause of damage, the response is slightly different. But ultimately, the body calls on immune cells to begin fighting the injury by destroying cells and repairing damage at the site of invasion. Inflammation may be better understood when viewed as an immune response.

The immune response is quite simple. Damaged cells release histamine, bradykinin and prostaglandins. These cause surrounding tissues to be inhabited by fluid, which leaks from blood vessels. The result is swelling, which helps contain the infection during the healing process. White blood cells are drawn to the site and begin consuming the invading cells. This process is called phagocytosis.

While there are many physical treatments that address the result of inflammation in the body, this article will focus primarily on nutrition. We’ll take a look at the top foods that fight inflammation as well as foods that contribute to it.

Known as “The Art of Eight Limbs,” Muay Thai (translated “Thai Boxing”) is a brutal stand-up combative martial art that combines punches, elbows, knees and kicks. It originates from Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, and evolved out of muay boran (ancient boxing), an unarmed combat method used by Siamese soldiers after they lost their weapons in battle. Muay Thai is an extremely effective and practical martial art, and has become increasingly popular with the recent interest of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts).

It is commonly said that fighters are the fittest and after competing in numerous sports since childhood, I will admit that I didn’t hit my peak as an athlete physically and mentally until I stepped into the ring to compete in Muay Thai. When I train to be “ring ready,” I know that it’s vital my cardio is above my opponent’s: cardio is king when you step in the ring. I have to be prepared to be quick, explosive and powerful the entire round for each round, which means, I train for endurance with bursts of speed and power.

You don’t have to be a competitive fighter to train like one!!  Get the workout…
